Education at LUCSUS

Sustainability Studies in an interdisciplinary, international and vibrant learning environment
The unique international, interdisciplinary setting at LUCSUS offers both master students in the LUMES programme and PhD candidates in the LUCID programme a vibrant learning environment which provides a forum for professional development in sustainability.

Master's Programme: LUMES

Lund University International Master’s programme in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science, LUMES, is a two-year M.Sc. programme in sustainability science.

The programme builds on the previous knowledge, skills, and experiences students possess with the intention of producing graduates with capacities to create change, from local to global levels. The ambition is to foster what can be called knowledge brokers, who are equipped with interdisciplinary and cross-cultural competencies in the field of sustainability.

LUMES has developed from a pioneering graduate programme in environmental studies to become an internationally renowned programme in sustainability science. Each year around 40 students with various academic training enrol in the programme.

"Since its start in 1997, more than 700 students from more than 100 different countries have graduated from the programme, and LUMES alumni are now spread all over the world."

PhD Programme: LUCID

LUCSUS coordinates the Linnaeus programme LUCID (Lund University Centre of Excellence for Integration of Social and Natural Dimensions of Sustainability). Since the progamme was launched in 2008, over 20 PhD candidates have graduated, where 17 of them have been in the field of sustainability science. Today, LUCSUS has additional doctoral candidates enrolled in the LUCID research programme. The research undertaken by the PhD candidates is diverse; however, it often focuses on comprehending and addressing sustainability challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity and land use change.
